I've noticed that I don't prefer reading parenting and self-help books as much as I used to. Before, I wanted to know all the answers of HOW to do things...in all aspects of mothering. These books just don't have what I'm searching for. It's taken me awhile (and I'm sure I've got a long way to go), but I think I'm starting to learn just how many answers the Lord has given us through scriptures and the living prophets. It may take a little longer to search them out. It may take a little more effort on our parts to fine tune that spiritual language so we can know what is right for us to do. And it may take patience as we wait for the direct answers. But it will all be worth it.
The following quotes describe peace, direction and joy. Reading and talking to different people about what methods they use may be helpful, but can also leave us feeling more confused and overwhelmed. For me, parenting has become something I cannot do without the Spirit, "which was sent forth to teach the truth (D&C 50:14)." I'd rather be guided by truth than all the philosophies in the world!
"In simple terms, the gift of the Holy Ghost is an enhanced spiritual power permitting those entitled thereto to receive it, to receive a greater knowledge and enjoyment of the influence of Deity." - - Elder Faust, April 1989
If we live close to the spirit we will have disappointments but we won't be disappointed in ourselves. - - Sister Bednar 2010
In the marvelous experience of Brigham Young in February of 1847, when the Prophet Joseph appeared to him in a dream or vision, Brigham pleaded to be reunited with the Prophet. Brigham Young asked the Prophet if he had a message for the Brethren. The Prophet said:
“Tell the people to be humble and faithful, and to be sure to keep the spirit of the Lord and it will lead them right. Be careful and not turn away the still small voice; it will teach them what to do and where to go; it will yield the fruits of the kingdom. Tell the Brethren to keep their hearts open to conviction, so that when the Holy Ghost comes to them, their hearts will be ready to receive it.”
The Prophet further directed Brigham Young as follows: “They can tell the Spirit of the Lord from all other spirits; it will whisper peace and joy to their souls; it will take malice, hatred, strife and all evil from their hearts; and their whole desire will be to do good, bring forth righteousness and build up the kingdom of God.” (Manuscript History of Brigham Young: 1846–47, Historical Dept., The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, pp. 528–31.) - - Elder Faust
